｢もったいない｣は、物を大事にする精神。

物を大事にするためには、直して使います。

昔から、直して使う方法として、｢刺し子｣があります。

｢刺し子｣とは、重ね合わせた布を、補強するための技術です。

ほつれた部分に布を重ねて、｢刺し子｣を施し、

丈夫にすることによって、布を大事に使っていました。

Loosely translated, it means if an old piece of cloth can hold even three small beans, you can certainly find a use for it.

This is what Japanese people call mottainai, a feeling of deep regret towards wastefulness.

The idea behind mottainai is that objects should be treated with the utmost importance.

One way to accomplish this is by repairing and reusing them.

In ancient times, out of this process of fixing and repurposing materials came the craft of quilting.

Quilting is the art of using overlapping cloth in order to reinforce it.

By layering frayed parts of material and quilting them together, they became more durable and took on a renewed importance.
